The Evolution of Counter-Strike's de_dust

How this classic map has changed in the Global Offensive beta.

February 2, 2012

Valve's ever-popular competitive shooter Counter-Strike has been around for over a decade. The latest iteration of the franchise, Global Offensive, is currently in closed beta testing on PC. Though not all features are currently built into the beta, the classic de_dust and de_dust2 maps are.

Maybe you got sick of Dust a long time ago, maybe you didn't. Regardless, you should check out what's new with one of Counter-Strike's most famous maps.

Terrorist Spawn

The different positioning of the GO screen isn't because I'm terrible at taking screenshots. That's the new Terrorist spawn position, which from the start puts the Ts closer to the underpass.

Underpass

There's a lot new with this part of the map in GO. The entire right side of the underpass area has been carved out, giving Terrorists more room to hide from CT snipers. There's also a stairwell that leads to the upper level, giving Ts multiple paths of attack.

Overpass

Here you can see a number of new features to make it harder for CTs to pin Ts down in this area. A ramp leads across the gap on the underpass ramp for more convenient access to the CT sniper nest. The stairwell from underpass exits to the right, and the crate traditionally set against the overpass' back wall has been moved forward, allowing Ts to use it for protection against CTs attacking from multiple directions.

Interior

Not many changes here. It sure looks a lot prettier in GO, though.

Bomb A

Again, pretty much the same from CS to GO, only with more barrels.

Bomb B

Another advantage for the Terrorists, they no longer have to run all the way into the CT spawn to plant at B. The bomb site has been moved into the entrance area and a few crates have been added for protection.

Valve's changes seem like good ones, making for a much more balanced map where the underpass area becomes a more viable method of assault for Terrorists.

There's no specific release date yet for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, but you can expect more updates and comparisons as more content is added to the beta.
