New PlayStation Move Sales Data Revealed

This afternoon, Sony held a GDC panel focusing entirely on its PlayStation Move motion peripheral. During the panel, Tommy de Roos of Guerilla Games and Peter Akemann of The Workshop talked at length about their experiences working with Move during the development of Killzone 3 and Sorcery, respectively. Look for more on those discussions tomorrow on IGN.

But at the beginning of the panel, Sony's Gabe Ahn revealed new PlayStation Move sales data. 10.5 million units have been shipped to retailers so far. With Sony's insistence on using shipped numbers in lieu of sold-to-consumer numbers, we did verify with Mr. Ahn after the panel to verify that his numbers were shipped and not sold. We also verified that the numbers include both PlayStation Move controllers and Navigation Controllers combined.

Such a revelation does diminish Mr. Ahn's claim that PlayStation Move's attach rate works out to be about 1 for every 6 PlayStation 3 consoles in the wild (with Navigation Controllers being useless without the PlayStation Move itself). However, it was clear that Sony is happy with the Move's performance so far and intends on continuing to explore what it can do in the future. PlayStation Move is "part of our DNA" at Sony, he commented.

Gabe Ahn also confirmed that Zindagi Games' launch title Sports Champions continues to be the most popular game for PlayStation Move (likely because it comes in a popular Move bundle), but also discussed other popular first and third party Move-enabled titles, including the aforementioned Killzone 3, LittleBigPlanet 2, Goldeneye Reloaded, Just Dance 3 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12. He also seemed excited about upcoming Move-enabled games, including BioShock Infinite, Ninja Gaiden III and PixelJunk 4am.
