Remedy Discusses Alan Wake 2

Remedy Discusses Alan Wake 2

It's a big future shrouded in darkness.

February 14, 2012

With Alan Wake finally reaching PC in a few days, and American Nightmare hitting XBLA next week, a full-fledged Alan Wake sequel is on a lot of minds – including developer Remedy's. While there's nothing set in stone in terms of announcements, Oskari Hakkinen, the head of franchise development on the series, is open to exploring new stories within the world.

"For Alan Wake, we planned a little bit more ahead," Hakkinen said. "So with the story [writer Sam Lake] had already created the fiction from the get-go to be something larger than just one game."

Hakkinen continued, "It's a lot more thought out than Max Payne ever was, but at the same time we've got nothing to announce."

Rumors surrounding a sequel indicate we'll hear more at E3 in June this year, but Alan Wake 2 may not appear on the next-generation consoles as previously thought. Remedy doesn't know what's in the hardware pipeline, so it's keeping mum about where any of their next games will appear. For the immediate future, there are no plans to bring any Alan Wake games to new platforms.

Fortunately, "if we were to do a sequel to Alan Wake, it certainly is a much quicker and easier development cycle than the original Alan Wake," Hakkinen said, "because the engine is created for the game. The overall fiction and the universe is already created."

That's hardly a big "if."

"The franchise is really close to our hearts. It's something we developed for a long time. You'll be seeing more of Alan Wake in the future."
